Islamabad: McDonald's Executive Addresses Price Increase Claims

Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, responded to allegations of steep price hikes in an open letter on Wednesday. He stated that the average price of McDonald’s menu items has risen by about 40% since 2019, countering social media claims, including from House Republicans, that prices have more than doubled.

"Americans are making tough spending decisions," Erlinger said. "We, along with our franchisees, must stay focused on value and affordability."

He detailed that the average price of a Big Mac meal is now $9.29, up 27% from $7.29 in 2019. Similarly, a 10-piece McNuggets meal price has increased by 28%, and medium french fries by 44%. These increases are attributed to higher input costs, such as crew salaries and goods.

"As a brand serving nearly 90% of the U.S. population annually, we feel responsible for ensuring the facts are clear," Erlinger added.

With consumer prices up 3.4% over the past year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rising costs have led some consumers to cut back on dining out, affecting even fast-food giants like McDonald’s. The company recently reported first-quarter same-store sales below expectations and plans to offer a $5 value meal for a month starting June 25.
