WAPDA Generates 34 Billion Units of Hydel Electricity, Slashes Costs by Rs106 Billion

In a significant accomplishment for Pakistan's energy sector, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) proudly announced the generation of approximately 34 billion units of affordable, environmentally friendly hydel electricity in the year 2023. This achievement not only highlights WAPDA's commitment to sustainable energy but also translates to substantial savings, cutting costs by an impressive Rs106 billion.

It is noteworthy that if the same quantity of electricity had been produced using expensive imported fossil fuels, the government would have faced an additional expenditure of about Rs106 billion. WAPDA's low-cost approach to generating hydel electricity, priced at only Rs3.51 per unit, constitutes around 30% of the total electricity supplied to the National Grid.

This year's hydel electricity production surpassed the 2022 figures, reaching 34 billion units compared to the previous 31.8 billion units—an increase of 2.2 billion units. This growth underscores the positive trajectory in Pakistan's energy landscape, with WAPDA contributing significantly to the nation's power generation capacity.

Notably, the emphasis on clean and green energy sources aligns with global sustainability goals, positioning Pakistan as a player in the transition towards a more environmentally responsible future.
