Samsung Unveils Samsung Gauss, a Multi-Purpose Generative AI Model
Samsung Gauss, an alternative to ChatGPT, emerges as a versatile AI solution
In a noteworthy development following OpenAI's recent developer event, Samsung introduced its very own generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, during the Samsung AI Forum 2023. Samsung Gauss, a creation of Samsung Research, comprises three distinct components: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image.
Samsung Gauss Language:
This substantial language model has the capacity to comprehend human language and respond to inquiries, akin to ChatGPT. It serves a wide range of applications, from aiding in email composition and document summarization to language translation. Samsung intends to integrate this language model into its smart devices, such as phones, laptops, and tablets, to enhance their intelligence. Regarding language support, the company remained tight-lipped on whether it caters to both English and Korean, when questioned by a Samsung spokesperson.
Designed in collaboration with its code assistant code.i, Samsung Gauss Code focuses specifically on streamlining code development. The core idea behind this component is to assist developers in rapidly writing code. The AI model for code is equipped to facilitate "code description and test case generation through an interactive interface."
Samsung Gauss Image:
As the name suggests, this feature is geared toward image generation and editing. It has the potential to transform low-resolution images into high-resolution ones, expanding its application in the realm of image enhancement.
While Samsung Gauss is currently in-house for staff utilization, the tech company plans to make it accessible to the general public "in the near future." However, specific details regarding the release timeline were not disclosed. Reports from local media suggest that Samsung is eyeing the release of the Galaxy S24, based on its Generative AI model, as early as 2024.
Furthermore, in an effort to ensure the ethical and secure use of AI, Samsung has established an AI Red Team tasked with monitoring security and privacy issues, spanning from data collection to AI development.
Daehyun Kim, Executive Vice President of the Samsung Research Global AI Center, affirmed the company's commitment to collaborating with the industry and academia on generative AI research, stating:
"We will continue to support and collaborate with the industry and academia on generative AI research."
It's worth noting that Samsung Gauss derives its name from the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, whose groundbreaking theory, the normal distribution, forms the backbone of AI and machine learning.
This launch of Samsung's generative AI model follows a temporary ban imposed seven months ago on generative AI tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, on company-owned devices, which came in response to an internal data leak earlier this year.
