Pakistan Implements Ban on Banana and Onion Exports to Control Prices

In Pakistan, despite the recent government decision to limit fruit exports, the prices of onions and bananas remain excessively high. Onions are currently fetching between Rs. 280-300 per kg, while bananas range from Rs. 150 to Rs. 250-300 per dozen.

Merely a fortnight ago, onions were priced at Rs. 150 per kg, and bananas ranged from Rs. 80-150 per dozen. The persistence of high prices is attributed to the unyielding wholesale rates at the primary fruit and vegetable market since the export ban was enforced on March 9.

Compounding the issue is the surge in demand for these commodities in anticipation of Ramadan. Exploiting this scenario, retailers have maintained elevated prices.

However, a potential decline in prices is anticipated in the coming days. Exporters, having received payments from international buyers, are now in the process of fulfilling their previous orders, which could alleviate the pricing pressure.
