ISLAMABAD: In a testament to its growing international prominence in sports, Pakistan is all set to host the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship. This championship showcases the country's commitment to fostering athletic excellence on a global stage.

Taekwondo, recognized as an Olympic sport in 213 countries, holds a significant place in Pakistan's sporting landscape. To promote and nurture the sport, the Pakistan Taekwondo Federation became a part of the World Taekwondo Federation back in 1977. Since then, it has actively participated in a multitude of international events, including the Taekwondo National Games, South Asian Games, Asian Games, Islamic Games, and various martial arts tournaments.

The forthcoming tournament, slated to unfold in Islamabad from November 1st to 5th, 2023, is poised to host participants in the senior poomsae and kyorugi categories. This event promises to draw talent from 27 countries, with 26 provincial and regional teams vying for supremacy.

In the previous iteration of the championship, held in Lahore, Pakistan's taekwondo contingent made the nation proud by securing three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, securing a well-deserved second place. Egypt clinched the top spot with an impressive tally of six gold and two silver medals.

Pakistan's journey in taekwondo reached a significant milestone in 2016 when the nation clinched the bronze medal during the Olympic qualification round. Additionally, two Pakistani athletes were honored with the prestigious Presidential Award in recognition of their remarkable athletic achievements.

With the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship on the horizon, Pakistan's sports enthusiasts eagerly await the chance to witness another remarkable showcase of talent and sportsmanship.
