Student Sets New Record with $9 Million in US Scholarship Offers

A remarkable accomplishment has been achieved by a student in Louisiana, United States, who has received university scholarship offers amounting to millions of dollars.

Dennis Barnes, a 16-year-old student at the International High School of New Orleans in his final year, applied to around 200 colleges across the country last August. As a result, he has been offered scholarships worth $9 million.

Barnes has already been accepted by at least 125 schools, and he remains hopeful of receiving more opportunities before making his final decision on enrollment. This exceptional achievement has the potential to set a new national record, as Barnes aims to reach a total of $10 million in scholarship offers.

In an interview with local media outlet WWL-TV, Barnes mentioned that his story gained significant attention on social media. He possesses an almost perfect grade point average (GPA) and is currently earning college credits at Southern University in New Orleans.

Despite the large number of applications, Barnes found the process of applying to numerous schools manageable, attributing his success to starting early and spreading out the applications over an extended period of time.

His plans include pursuing a dual degree in computer science and criminal justice, according to a statement released by his school. Next month, Barnes will announce the college he chooses for his higher education.

In offering advice to fellow students, Barnes emphasized the importance of planning ahead, networking with college partners, and maintaining a clear vision to achieve goals.

The previous record was held by Normandie Cormier, another student from Louisiana, who received a total scholarship aid of $9.4 million from approximately 140 schools in 2019. Cormier is currently completing her master’s degree at Louisiana State University and had also sought recognition from the Guinness World Records for her accomplishment, although it could not be confirmed if she was the sole student worldwide to achieve such a feat.
