OpenAI is set to launch a dedicated marketplace, the GPT Store, where developers can list custom applications built on its text-generating AI models, including the upcoming GPT-4. The anticipated release is scheduled for the coming week.

In correspondence obtained by TechCrunch, OpenAI emphasized that developers creating GPTs must carefully review the updated usage policies and GPT brand guidelines to ensure compliance. Only GPTs meeting the criteria will be eligible for listing in the GPT Store. Developers are also required to authenticate their user profiles and publish their GPTs as "public."

Originally announced during OpenAI's inaugural developer conference, DevDay, last year, the GPT Store faced delays in December, likely attributed to a leadership shakeup that transpired in November. CEO Sam Altman's temporary departure and subsequent return, accompanied by a new board, caused the postponement.

GPTs, known for their user-friendly nature, do not demand coding expertise and can range in complexity based on developers' preferences. For instance, a GPT can be trained on a collection of recipes to answer specific cooking-related queries. Alternatively, it could assimilate a company's proprietary codebases to assist developers in style checking or generating code adhering to best practices.

Developers can articulate desired capabilities for their GPTs in plain language using OpenAI's GPT-building tool, GPT Builder. This tool aims to create AI-powered chatbots accordingly. While developers have been able to create and share GPTs through the ChatGPT website since DevDay, public listing has not been an option until the introduction of the GPT Store.

The revenue-sharing structure for the GPT Store remains unclear. In November, Altman and CTO Mira Murati mentioned the absence of a definitive plan for GPT monetization. The email regarding the imminent GPT Store launch provides no insights into payment expectations for developers.

As previously highlighted in TechCrunch's AI newsletter, OpenAI's transition from an AI model provider to a platform was anticipated, especially evident with the introduction of plug-ins for ChatGPT in March. This move brought third-party developers into OpenAI's model ecosystem for the first time.

GPTs contribute to the democratization of generative AI app creation, particularly for applications leveraging OpenAI's model family. This evolution could potentially challenge consultancies reliant on building GPT-like solutions for clients.

While the impact of this shift remains uncertain, it underscores OpenAI's strategic transformation and the evolving landscape of AI application development.
