IndiGo of India sets a new record by placing an order for 500 aircraft from the A320 Family.

IndiGo, the largest airline in India based on market share, has made a significant purchase by placing a firm order for 500 aircraft from the A320 Family. This deal sets a new record for the largest single purchase agreement ever made in the history of commercial aviation. With this latest order, IndiGo's total number of Airbus aircraft on order reaches 1,330, solidifying its position as the world's biggest customer for the A320 Family.

The momentous purchase agreement was signed during the Paris Air Show 2023, with key figures such as Rahul Bhatia (Promoter & Managing Director of IndiGo), Dr. Venkataramani Sumantran (Chairman and Non-Executive Independent Director of IndiGo), Pieter Elbers (CEO of IndiGo), Guillaume Faury (Airbus CEO), and Christian Scherer (Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International) in attendance.

Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, emphasized the significance of this historic order, stating that it enables IndiGo to continue fostering economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India. He expressed pride in IndiGo's position as the preferred airline for connectivity within and outside of India, highlighting their commitment to being a leading global carrier. Elbers reaffirmed IndiGo's belief in India's growth, the A320 Family, and their strategic partnership with Airbus.

Christian Scherer, the Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus, described this landmark order as a new chapter in the relationship between Airbus and IndiGo. He emphasized that the A320 Family's outstanding operating economics have driven IndiGo's growth for nearly two decades and have been crucial in democratizing affordable air travel in India. Scherer expressed Airbus' pride in their successful long-standing relationship with IndiGo and their commitment to contributing to the growth of India's air connectivity.

IndiGo, headquartered in New Delhi, is one of the world's fastest-growing airlines. Since receiving its first A320neo aircraft in March 2016, its fleet of A320neo Family has become one of the largest globally, with 264 aircraft in operation (162 A320neo, 79 A321neo, 21 A320ceo, and 2 A321 freighters). IndiGo's previous orders with Airbus include 100 A320 Family aircraft in 2005, 180 A320 Family (including the NEO) in 2011, 250 A320neo Family aircraft in 2014, and 300 A320neo Family aircraft in 2019, bringing the total order book to 830 A320 Family aircraft.
