Balochistan, Pakistan - In response to a worrisome upsurge in cases of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), commonly referred to as the "Congo virus," provincial authorities in Balochistan have issued a "health emergency" declaration to address the situation.

The Congo virus, caused by the tick-borne Nairovirus and transmitted through tick bites or contact with infected animals, has struck with 44 reported cases in the region. This illness is known for its severe viral hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality rate ranging from 10 to 40%, making it a cause for significant concern.

To combat the spread of the virus, a series of stringent measures have been implemented. Under Section 144, private slaughterhouses in Quetta have been temporarily prohibited from operation for two weeks, with slaughtering activities restricted to designated locations away from urban areas.

The provincial livestock department has been directed to take swift action by disinfecting cattle markets, a crucial step to prevent further transmission. Preliminary findings suggest that the virus may have originated from a patient in Harnai, prompting the sealing of the affected ward and a comprehensive disinfection process in other departments.

In an effort to ensure prompt medical care for the affected individuals, two healthcare workers who have contracted the Congo virus are being urgently transported to Karachi via air ambulance. Additionally, the heroic doctor who succumbed to the virus while serving the community will be remembered as a martyr, with benefits being provided to support his surviving family.
