Google to start deleting inactive accounts

Google has set its sights on eliminating accounts that have remained inactive for the past two years.

Starting from December 1st, Google will commence the removal of these inactive accounts, while simultaneously issuing alerts or notifications via email to the concerned users. Those who have provided an alternate email for backup will also receive a reminder at that address.

This initiative, which was announced in May, is being implemented to mitigate potential security concerns. Google’s internal research revealed that inactive accounts are more susceptible to being overlooked for updates in terms of new features and security measures. Consequently, these accounts become more vulnerable to activities such as hacking, phishing, or spam.

However, it’s important to note that specific types of accounts will be exempted from this action, including accounts associated with YouTube channels or accounts utilized for purchasing digital items.

To prevent their accounts from facing deletion, users are required to log in to their Google accounts or any Google service at least once within a two-year timeframe. Engaging in activities such as reading emails, conducting searches, or similar interactions will help to fulfill this requirement and maintain the account’s active status.
