Tesla announces further 600 layoffs in California amid global job cuts

In a notice to the state government, Tesla announced that it intends to fire 601 more workers in California as part of a global job-cutting initiative that started a month ago due to declining sales and escalating price competition.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced on April 15 that the company would fire over 10% of its workforce worldwide, which amounted to over 140,000 people by the end of 2023. Since then, the manufacturer of electric vehicles has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs, as reported by people familiar with the situation, because Musk wished to reduce the company's workforce by 20%.

According to Tesla's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN), the most recent layoff plan will impact employees at its facilities in Palo Alto and Fremont, California. It will begin during the 14-day period beginning on June 20, 2024.

As part of headcount reductions, the electric vehicle manufacturer announced last month that it would lay off 6,020 employees in Texas and California.

Moreover, 285 workers at its Buffalo, New York facilities, which house the labelling team for its Autopilot driver assistance software and which manufactures fast-charging equipment, were also laid off as part of the global job reductions. On April 30, Musk dissolved the Tesla Supercharger group.
