President directs COMSATS to let student complete degree

President Dr. Arif Alvi has authorized COMSATS University to let a student whose enrollment had been revoked finish his studies.

Hammad bin Zain’s admittance to COMSATS had been revoked after three and a half years of studies, at a stage when he had completed seven of eight semesters.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Secretariat’s press wing, Zain’s admittance in 2017 was canceled due to the fact that he did not meet the requisite marks.

“It was surprising that the administration of the university could make such a huge error by granting him admission and then informing him, after a lapse of 3.5 years, that he was not eligible for admission,” President Alvi was quoted as saying in the release.

He stated that the student had paid his tuition for eight semesters and dutifully completed the semester course.

“Justice demanded that COMSATS correct the situation by allowing the student to finish his degree programme,” he continued.

The order was issued in response to Zain’s representation against the federal ombudsman’s orders. Zain had complained to the ombudsman about COMSATS, claiming that it was the university’s responsibility to review the eligibility criteria and that he should have been denied entrance in 2017 if he did not match the standards.

The ombudsman’s judgment did not provide any relief to the complainant, instead ordering COMSATS to launch an investigation into the entire case and hold the culpable officials accountable for their irresponsibility.

While recognising Zain’s representation, the president overturned the federal ombudsman’s ruling by noting that the student was enrolled in the BS (Business Administration) programme and had previously finished 3.5 years of his degree programme.

“Because there was no allegation of misrepresentation against him, the student should not be made to suffer for the administration’s negligence,” President Alvi added.

He stated that the student’s time, money, and efforts will be wasted as a result of his admission being canceled, and he directed the university administration to reinstate Zain’s admission and report compliance to the federal ombudsman.
