ISLAMABAD: PepsiCo has launched a new recycling program and tourism awareness campaign in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with its trademark potato chip brand Lay's.

As part of this progressive initiative, which was unveiled on Monday, Lay's has teamed up with the Kaghan Development Authority of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to increase community awareness of proper waste disposal techniques, sorting waste at the source, and the value of recycling programs among tourists.

Lay's is also sourcing old packaging from Pakistan's northern regions during the busy summer travel season and upcycling it into tote bags and eco-friendly clothing.

This program is part of the "Summer with Lay's" promotion, which blends the delight of snacking with the spirit of giving back to communities and promoting responsible tourism. It is in accordance with PepsiCo's pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) global sustainability goal.

In accordance with this program, Lay's has collaborated with the government to build waste collecting bins in 12 strategic locations around hilly regions, lakes, and tourist destinations.

Green Earth Recycling, a seasoned recycling partner of PepsiCo, collects the used packaging that has been collected in the bins and deposits it with upcycling partner Dastan-e-Rumaan.

On handlooms at Dastan-e-Rumaan, artisans weave tote bags from these cleansed wrappers. Additionally supporting women's entrepreneurship and enabling income-generating activities, this upcycling endeavor.

A consumer-focused engagement for "Summer with Lay's" has also been conducted by Lay's at 50 popular tourist destinations, such as Murree, Abbottabad, Naran, and Gilgit. At these locations, Lay's floats provided mouthwatering "Chip & Dip" experiences with flavors influenced by regional ingredients and delivered crucial behavior change messages regarding proper packaging disposal. This campaign included prominent influencers as well to emphasize the importance of maintaining tourism destinations' cleanliness and sustainability.

"PepsiCo is committed to advancing the circular economy for plastics through collection and recycling efforts with our recycling partners," stated Mohammad Khosa, Senior Commercial Director Foods at PepsiCo Pakistan.

The goal of our pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) agenda is to eliminate the need for plastic to ever end up in the trash. Through the exciting "Summer with Lay's" program, we are utilizing the strength of our flagship brand to bring happy snacking moments to these stunning Pakistani landscapes, as well as our key partnership with the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to mainstream our shared vision and raise public awareness about proper waste disposal and recycling.
