KARACHI: In a poignant loss to Pakistan's journalism community, Professor Shahida Kazi, a trailblazing journalist and educator renowned for her substantial impact on the country's media landscape, has passed away at the age of 79.
Shahida Kazi, a pioneering figure among Pakistan's first-generation women journalists in print media, leaves behind a legacy marked by numerous distinctions throughout her remarkable career. Her contributions to the field were immeasurable.
In a significant milestone, she completed her Master's degree in journalism at Karachi University between 1963 and 1965, marking her as the first woman to achieve this feat. Her journey included pivotal roles as a news producer and news editor at Pakistan Television, where she played a vital role in shaping the narrative of Pakistan's broadcast media.
Shahida Kazi joined Dawn, one of Pakistan's leading newspapers, in 1966, making history as the first woman reporter at the publication. Her dedication to journalism extended to covering a wide array of subjects, showcasing her versatility and passion for unbiased reporting.
Her illustrious career was not only characterized by her professional accomplishments but also by her commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists. Shahida Kazi made significant educational contributions by leading the Mass Communication Department at Karachi University and heading various other media-related departments, where she inspired and mentored countless students.
In addition to her journalism and teaching roles, Professor Kazi's literary work encompassed research articles on critical areas such as media, education, women's issues, and social problems. Her authorship included influential books such as "Television Journalism" and "Pakistan Studies in Focus." Notably, her autobiography, titled "Sweet, Sour and Bitter — A Life Well Lived," was introduced to the world earlier this year, providing readers with a glimpse into her rich and eventful life.
Professor Shahida Kazi's contributions to journalism and education will be celebrated and remembered by those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her son, and her funeral is scheduled for Sunday at the KU graveyard, following Zuhr prayers at Jamia Masjid, Faizan-i-Bismillah, Sunny Side Road, Civil Lines.
