In a significant development at COP 28, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and President of the Republic of Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, underscored the importance of achieving tangible outcomes in climate action and justice. The leaders, in a bilateral meeting, pledged to advance mutual cooperation in the fight against climate change, emphasizing the need for practical solutions.
Expressing a commitment to promote peace and development in South Asia through enhanced regional cooperation, PM Kakar and President Muizzu resolved to strengthen bilateral relations. They aimed to foster high-level dialogue and cooperation in economic, trade, cultural, and tourism sectors, capitalizing on the goodwill between the two nations.
On the sidelines of COP-28 in the UAE, Prime Minister Kakar engaged in discussions with Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf, focusing on collaborative efforts to address climate change and strengthen bilateral ties. The prime minister highlighted COP-28 as a pivotal step towards sustainable global partnerships.
Additionally, Prime Minister Kakar met with Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to discuss progress on Pakistan's polio eradication efforts. Acknowledging ongoing vaccination drives, the prime minister pledged Pakistan's full commitment to eliminating the poliovirus. The meeting also explored cooperation in financial inclusion, poverty alleviation, malnutrition, and urged the Gates Foundation to collaborate on national capacities in STEM education and disaster management.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Kakar and Prime Minister of Syria Hussein Arnous, on the sidelines of COP 28, called on Israel to cease brutal force against Palestinians, ensure a ceasefire, and address the Palestinian question in line with UN Security Council resolutions. The leaders expressed commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation and revive the Joint Ministerial Commission, fostering understanding between the two countries.
