India to have its own New York-like Central Park in Mumbai

Indian city Mumbai will soon have a 300-acre theme park, very much like the Central Park of New York City.

The government of Maharashtra has proposed a plan to build a park on international guidelines and standards

Central Park in Mumbai:

The Mahalaxmi Race Course consists of 211 acres, where 120 acres will be transformed into Central Park.

The government would provide the land to the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which will serve as the focal development agency, according to the Chief Minister's Office.

Mahalaxmi Racecourse agrees to hand over the land:

On Sunday, the BMC's plan to turn the Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a theme park received approval from the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).

Reportedly, 76.24% of RWITC members voted in favour of the plan to permanently return 120 acres of property that they had leased to the BMC over a century ago.

The lease for the turf club ended in 2013, and the BMC had offered to extend it for another 30 years, provided the RWITC turned over half of the 211 acres of property it owns.

The cabinet has given its approval for RWITC to be granted a 91-acre land lease. The lease will be renewed by the guidelines and will last for an additional 30 years from the date of actual possession.
