Apple says iPhones will support RCS in 2024

In a major development, Apple has announced its decision to support RCS (Rich Communication Services) on iPhones, aligning with the messaging standard used by Android devices.

Despite previous reluctance, Apple is set to integrate RCS into iPhones through a software update in late 2024, potentially as part of iOS 18.

This move will enable enhanced messaging features, such as read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media sharing, group chats, and end-to-end encryption, fostering improved communication between Android and iPhone users.

Notably, Apple clarified that RCS support will coexist with iMessage, maintaining SMS and MMS as fallback options. While Apple’s implementation of RCS aligns with the GSM Association’s Universal Profile standard, the company remains closed to opening iMessage to other platforms. The decision is expected to impact the global messaging landscape, promoting more equitable communication across different devices.
